According to Dr TP Lahane, dean of Sir JJ Hospital, medical tests conducted by PD Hinduja hospital revealed Indrani overdosed on an anti-depressant, traces of which were found in her urine.

However, the forensic lab did not find any drug in her system. “We worked overnight and our tests have confirmed there was no drug in her urine, blood or stomach wash samples,” said a senior FSL scientist.

Lahane wasn’t convinced, saying, “She had consumed 10 times the prescribed dose. She has 2,088 units of benzodiazepine in her blood.” The drug, according to doctors, is a sedative. “She was also on Mirtzapine, an anti-depressant, and the anti-anxiety drug Etizolam,” Dr Lahane added.

Doctors at JJ hospital had said Friday that Indrani may have collected her medicines and consumed them at one go.

A team of doctors treating Indrani said she was in a state of stupour but responding to pain stimuli, and that her pupils were dilated as a result of the drug overdose.

The police, meanwhile, are looking into Indrani’s overdose at Byculla jail, where she was lodged after her arrest in the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora. A suicide attempt is suspected.

“We will be enquiring about medical procedure and whether it was followed by jail staff and doctors,” said IG (prisons) Bipin Kumar Singh, adding that statements of prison staff, doctors and nurses, and barrack inmates would be taken.

The state government has asked Singh to submit a report within seven days.

The government has also directed the IG to inquire if any foul play may have taken place.
