Actor Yami Gautam thanks her stylists for doing a brilliant job with hair extensions during the shoot of Batti Gul Meter Chalu.

Actor Yami Gautam took her fans by surprise when she shared a video on Instagram, in June, where she was seen getting her hair cut really short. Soon, it was out that the actor “broke up with her long hair” for her upcoming film, Uri, where she plays the role of an intelligence officer.

“The idea came from my director and stylist. We were discussing my look for the film. Aditya (Dhar; director) said he’s got some references. He said, ‘I think we should go short with it’. Now, I didn’t know how short he meant; maybe a trim, so, I was like ‘okay, sure, why not’. But when I saw the pictures, I realised there’s almost no length of the hair,” says Yami.

She adds that since she’s playing a pivotal role, it was only wise to follow her director’s word. “I don’t see this character having much time for vanity. It shouldn’t look like you have styled or curled your hair. It’s probably like you get ready with whatever you have because you’re always on the go. At the same time, you should be presentable, of course, because you work at a certain organisation,” she elaborates.

Stating that she “loved the idea”, Yami feels that “it’s about that time we move beyond certain notions when it comes to preparation and how far one can go for their role.” Not getting into the gender debate, she adds, “It might have been the case till now that only male actors experimented with their looks, but things are changing.”

While Yami is enjoying her new look, she reveals that the shooting for her other film, Batti Gul Meter Chalu, wasn’t over yet when she chopped her hair. The actor plays the role of a lawyer in the film, which also stars Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor.

“When I had put out the picture, Shahid asked me, ‘Is this for our film? It doesn’t look like (it)’. In Batti, I have braided hair because you can’t go to the court with blow-dried hair; it looks funny in a courtroom. So, they have to be neat. I could’ve made a ponytail, but it wasn’t possible with such short length. So, we used extensions for the rest of the shoot. It was quite tricky, but I think my stylists have done a brilliant job. When I finally went to Batti set, everyone forgot that I have short hair,” she recalls.
