2018 Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast, Highlights: India at 3rd spot with 12 golds

Get highlights of 2018 Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast, Day 8 here. Indian shooters Shreyasi Singh, Om Mitharval and Ankur Mittal won a gold and two bronze medals in their respective events at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast on Wednesday.

Shooter Shreyasi Singh won India’s first gold on Wednesday when she clinched the women’s double trap final in a shoot-off at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. Earlier, Om Mitharval was the first Indian to win a medal on Wednesday when he clinched the men’s 50m pistol bronze. A short while later, Ankur Mittal won the men’s double trap bronze. Another highlight for India was MC Mary Kom’s victory in the 48 kg semi-final bout against Sri Lanka’s Anusha Dilrukshi Koddithuwakku. The Olympic bronze medallist will now fight for a gold in the final. She shot 96 in the finals and beat Australia’s Emma Cox 2 shots to 1 in the shoot-off at Belmont Shooting Centre. The other Indian contender in the field, Varsha Varman finished fourth with 86. The bronze medal went to Scotland’s Linda Pearson, who shot 87 to finish a point ahead of Varsha, who held the third place for a while

The Indian maintained his lead with his next two shots but Repacholi went ahead by a point after two more attempts. Mitharwal then found himself in the silver medal position with 148.3 following scores of 9.8 and 8.6, before a 10.2 and 10.0 placed him level with the home favourite. He maintained the second position as he raced to 186.3, ahead by three points over Ahmed. However, he could not continue the momentum and conceded lead in the following round with a 7.2 and 7.6, going down from gold to silver and finally settling for bronze

08:50 hrs IST: Indian shooter Om Prakash Mitharval settled for the bronze in men’s 50m pistol final but fancied Jitu Rai finished a disappointing 8th. Mitharval, who won a bronze in the 10m air pistol event two days ago, shot 201.1 to finish third in the eight-man finals at Belmont Shooting Centre. Australia’s Daniel Repacholi bagged the gold with a Games record 227.2 while Shakil Ahmed of Bangladesh won silver with 220.5. Rai, gold medallist in 10m, was out of reckoning quickly, having managed 105.0 in what turned out to be a disappointing finals

08:40 hrs IST: On the other hand, Maitreyee’s compatriot Vaishnavi’s dreams of reaching the semi-finals are almost over after losing 0-3 to Nigerian Obazuaye. The Indian had no reply to the Nigerian’s aggressive play in all the three games that saw her winning 11-0, 11-2, 11-2. Vaishnavi had earlier lost to Canada’s Stephanie Chan on Tuesday. She will next face Australian Andrea McDonnell on Thursday

08:30 hrs IST: Indian para paddlers Maitreyee Sarkar and Vaishnavi Sutar had a mixed outing in their respective women’s TT6-10 singles group matches. While Maitreyee thrashed Papua New Guniea’s Vero Nime 3-0 in Group 1, Vaishnavi went down 0-3 to Nigerian Faith Obazuaye in Group 2. Maitreyee overcame the loss to Australian Melissa Tapper, with a 3-0 (11-2, 11-9, 11-2) win over the PNG paddler. 08:10 hrs IST: India were off to a disappointing start in lawn bowls events on Wednesday after both Krishna Xalxo and the women’s pairs team losing their respective matches. In men’s singles sectional play, Krishna failed to open his account against New Zealand’s Shannon McIlroy to go down 0-21 in a tie that only lasted for nine rounds. McIlroy began his domination right from the start even as the Indian was struggling to open his scoring at Broadbeach. With the loss, Krishna’s journey in men’s singles come to an end

08:05 hrs IST: Indian boxing legend MC Mary Kom (48 kg) advanced to the final with a comprehensive triumph over Sri Lanka’s Anusha Dilrukshi Koddithuwak. It was a battle of veterans as 35-year-old Mary Kom took on the 39-year-old Dilrukshi. Mary Kom prevailed 5-0 in a dull contest where clean punches were few and far. Despite the height advantage, Koddithuwak struggled to connect for most part. She picked up pace in the final three minutes but Mary Kom drew from her own well of experience to thwart her. The five-time world champion and Olympic bronze medallist Indian is competing in her maiden Commonwealth Games

Top shooters will also be in action in men’s 50m pistol, men’s and women’s double trap. Jitu Rai and Om Mitharval (men’s 50m pistol), Ankur Mittal and Mohammed Ashab (men’s double trap) along with Shreyashi and Varsha (women’s double trap) are all capable of winning medals.

In boxing, apart from Mary, Sarita Devi (women’s 60kg), Pinki Rani (women’s 51 kg), Gaurav Solanki (men’s 52kg), Vikas Krishan (men’s 75kg) and Manish Kaushik (men’s 60kg) are all playing their quarter-final bouts. A win for each of them will assure India of medals.

In athletics, national champion Tejaswin Shankar is competing in the high jump final. In women’s long jump, Nellickal V Neena and Nayana James would hope to do wonders.

Indian men’s hockey team is playing England in a Pool B match.

Apart from that individual competition starts in badminton from Wednesday. Top players like Kidambi Srikanth, HS Prannoy, PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal will be in action.

Indian squash players and table tennis players will also start their individual competitions from Wednesday.
